What a BMW VIN check can—and cannot—tell you

Use WMI, type code and checksum as screening signals, not a compatibility verdict.

Useful signals

The first three characters identify the manufacturer context, while positions four through seven can map to known internal type-code candidates. North-American VINs also use the ninth-position checksum.

These signals can narrow the likely series and expected workflow before connecting to the car.

The limit

Type-code datasets are incomplete, markets differ, and a VIN does not describe every ECU or software update. That is why CodexDrive returns honest screening outcomes — not a universal supported/unsupported claim.

The real vehicle scan, including FA and ECU discovery, is authoritative.

This article is general educational material, not a vehicle-specific coding instruction. Confirm your exact car, ECU state and recovery plan before making changes.
